Belfast first signed up for the Urban Broadband Fund in 2013, which allows businesses in the city to apply for vouchers to expand their internet connectivity. In 2015 the city has expanded on its commitments to connectivity in the city by launching the Belfast Connection Vouchers Scheme for businesses and charities.

The city has also committed to a more efficient Wi-Fi network for the public with Metro wireless and the BelfastWiFi program, which will connect up many public buildings in the city.

Belfast has received funding of £13.7m from the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport as well as funding from European Regional Development Fund and the private sector. The efforts are all part of Belfast’s wider economic- and infrastructure-focused Investment Programme.
